What Is An Air-Cooled Chiller? The Ultimate Guide To Chiller Systems And Different Types Of Air Chillers.

Air-cooled chillers are used in various industrial and commercial settings for cooling fluids. They generally work in tandem with the air handler system of the establishment and work by absorbing heat from processed water. An air-cooled chiller is best in areas where the additional heat dissipation is not problematic and when users seek a compact and high-efficiency cooling solution.

How do Air-Cooled Chillers Operate?

An air-cooled chiller comprises the evaporator, the compressor, the condenser, and the expansion valve. The liquid refrigerant in the evaporator moves over the evaporator tube bundle. The water circulating in the tube bundle generates heat vaporizing the refrigerant. These vapors are absorbed by the compressor and pumped into the condenser. This increases the temperature and pressure, causing the refrigerant vapor in the condenser tubes to turn back into liquid form. The internal heat is released in the air or cools water. The high-pressure liquid flows into the expansion device and in the evaporator, where the cycle is repeated and continues cyclically, thus helping to cool down the liquids.

Must-Know Facts About Air Cooled Chillers

Rather than using cooling towers, an air-cooled chiller dissipates the heat produced in the surrounding air. That is why placing these chillers in areas with easy access to a significant amount of fresh air is essential. Hence it is not surprising that these chillers are often located externally on the roofs of buildings or ground level. The heat generated can also warm up indoor spaces in low-temperature areas.

Different Types of Air-Cooled Chillers

Air chillers are generally of two types depending on the area of placement. These include the following.

Stationary Chillers: These air-cooled chillers are used in areas where heat dissipation is not an issue and are often permanently placed.

Portable Chillers: These portable chillers are generally used in emergencies or for one-time events and offer a temporary cooling solution.

The above details about air-cooled chillers can help potential users make the right choice.
